TOEFL — Test of English as a Foreign Language
TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test) is the preferred English proficiency test for most US universities and is widely accepted in Canada, Australia, and Europe. It tests academic English specifically — reading, listening, speaking, and writing in an integrated format.
What score do you need?
Minimum requirements vary by university and programme. These are typical ranges — always check the exact cutoff on your target university's admissions page.
| University Type | UG Requirement | PG Requirement | Top Universities |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States — State Universities | 79 – 90 | 90 – 100 | 100+ |
| United States — Ivy League / Top 20 | 100+ | 105+ | 110+ |

How to prepare smart
Unlike IELTS, TOEFL speaking and writing require you to connect a passage, a lecture, and your response. Practise this integrated format specifically.
Know the exact TOEFL cutoff of your target university before you begin prep — overshooting by 20 points wastes preparation time.
ETS's official TOEFL prep (toefl.org) has the most accurate questions. Third-party books vary a lot in quality.
American accent is not required. Clear, paced speech with logical structure scores well.
