Forex Card — the smartest way to manage money abroad.
A forex card saves Indian students thousands of rupees in hidden bank charges, poor exchange rates, and international transaction fees. Here's everything you need to know before you fly.
What is a forex card?
A forex card is a prepaid travel card that holds foreign currency — USD, GBP, EUR, AUD, and more. You (or your parents) load it in India at a fixed exchange rate before you leave, and spend abroad like a debit card — at shops, restaurants, online, and at ATMs. No international transaction fees, no exchange rate surprises.
Lower cost than debit/credit
Regular Indian debit and credit cards charge 2–4% forex markup on every international transaction. Forex cards eliminate or drastically reduce this.
Locked-in exchange rate
You load at a fixed rate when the rate is favourable. If the rupee falls later, you're protected — you already have your foreign currency.
Reloadable from India
Parents can top up the card from India online — no need to transfer money internationally. Most banks allow reload within a few hours.

Choose your card

Apply online or at the branch
Most forex cards can be applied for online — visit the bank or provider's website, fill the form, upload your KYC documents (Aadhaar, PAN, passport).
Load the amount
Load the required foreign currency. Check the exchange rate carefully — loading when the rate is favourable saves money.
Activate and set PIN
Activate the card before departure. Set your PIN via the app or bank portal. Register for SMS/email alerts.
Inform your bank of travel
Notify your card issuer of your travel dates and destination — prevents fraud blocks on first use abroad.
Reload remotely from India

Key things to check before you load
Common questions
How much should I load on my forex card?
Load enough for 2–3 months of living expenses initially. Check our Cost of Living Estimator for a realistic monthly number by country. Don't load your entire year's expenses upfront — exchange rates may improve.
Can I use a forex card to pay university tuition?
Some universities accept card payments — but many require a bank transfer (wire transfer) for tuition. Check with your university. For large tuition payments, your loan disbursal is usually sent directly to the university by the lender.
What if my forex card is lost or stolen?
Block the card immediately via the app or customer care. Most issuers offer emergency card replacement abroad within 2–5 working days. Your money is safe — only the plastic card is lost.
Is a forex card the same as a travel card?
Yes — the terms are used interchangeably. Both refer to a prepaid card loaded with foreign currency for use abroad.
Can I withdraw cash from ATMs abroad with a forex card?
Yes — most forex cards support ATM withdrawals abroad. A small fee applies per withdrawal (usually ₹100–150 equivalent). Use ATMs only when you need cash — card payments are always cheaper.
